Somewhere Hoodie

In the summer of 2019, I was at the dollar store when some colored pencils seemed to leap out at me. I hadn't used colored penciled in over 20 years, but in the weird way things go, I felt compelled to see what I could do with them. I bought em, got home all excited to make something, and got immediately distracted by something else.

They sat on my desk for days, then weeks. A reminder of the thing I never finished because I never even started. It’s a weird pressure to put on yourself, to always be productive. Because for those times when you aren’t, you’re worrying about all the possibilities of what you could be doing instead of focused on what’s in front of you.

Still unsure of what I was going to make, I finally sat down one night after work and wrote the word “somewhere” on a piece of paper. As in gonna start somewhere. Then I connected the lines of the letters and filled in the spaces.

Partway through, I saw a couple of creatures pop out at me, so I drew in some eyes and feathers. The more I looked, the more I saw. It was fun to discover each new one, like a game.

Remembering how I was kicking myself for weeks for not doing anything, and seeing this now, I really appreciate how this turned out. And I had a lot of fun making it. May it remind you that worrying about what you could be doing is energy that could be spent on what you are doing instead.
